Volunteer Positions

 

UPDATED: OpSail 2012 Virginia is accepting volunteer applications for the following positions: welcome center, bus guides for the OpSail 2012 Virginia Norfolk Freeway, guides on crew excursions to local attractions for visiting sailors, translators (Spanish, Portuguese, German, Danish, Norwegian, and Indonesian), and dockside pier assistants.

Administrative Assistance (January 1-June 15, 2012) Position involves filing, answering phones, data entry prior to and during the event.

Crew Center- On-Call Drivers, Runners, Crew Info Center (June 1-12, 2012) Volunteer must be familiar with the Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay area and local businesses and attractions.  Volunteer would direct the visiting crew members with buses/vans/taxis and be able to give accurate directions to surrounding activities; such as shopping, Virginia Beach, Busch Gardens, Soccer Tournament, etc.

Decorators (May 15- June 15, 2012) Two weeks prior to the event, Festevents will begin decorating Downtown Norfolk waterfront and Historic Freemason District.  Decorator volunteers would assist with these efforts and must be able to climb ladders and carry up to 25 pounds.

Docents/Educators (June 6-12, 2012) Knowledgeable about the War of 1812 and local historical sites, docents will be on-hand during the event to answer questions from the general public.

Dockside Ship Guides (June 6-12, 2012) This position requires some training prior to the event.   Dockside Ship Guides will have general information about ships and answer questions for the public alongside the docks. 

Event Manager/Assistants (June 6-12, 2012) Position involves managing a section or a program during the event, focusing on managing entertainment and related activities, crowd control and troubleshooting. 

Marketing Assistants (Feb 1-June 12, 2012) Position involves the distribution of publicity materials in the months preceding the event.

Public Information Assistance (June 6-12, 2012) Position involves the on-site distributing of maps and programs as well as answering questions from the public.  Time commitment is flexible throughout the event.

Relief Volunteers (June 6-12, 2012) Position requires responding to emerging needs and filling in for other volunteers.

Sales Assistance (June 1-12, 2012) Position involves assisting Festevents staff with vendors and concessions.

Ship Liaisons (June 1-12, 2012) Volunteer will serve as direct point of contact between the OpSail 2012 Virginia™  staff and a visiting ship.  Liaisons will assist in providing ships officers and crews with daily schedules, detailed information about the local area, where to obtain needed services and parts, help direct crew and officers to important meetings and special events, and ensure constant communication between OpSail 2012 Virginia™ staff and their designated ship.  Liaisons will be required to participate in pre-training and pre-event activities and will be asked to spend extended hours with their designated ship during the event.  Foreign language skills, an understanding of marine maintenance/repair, and a strong familiarity with local vendors are highly sought attributes for this position.  Liaisons must be on 24/7 call in case of emergencies.

Soccer Tournament Coordinators (June 8-10, 2012) This position requires knowledge and experience with the game of soccer and assisting organizers with managing multiple games; including registration and hospitality on site. 

Soccer Tournament Managers/Assistants (June 8-10, 2012) OpSail 2012 Virginia™ will need a total of 12 assistants to the soccer coordinator.  Volunteers must have knowledge of the game. 

Translators (as needed January-June 2012, full time June 1-12, 2012) Native or fluent language skills in Danish, Norwegian, Portuguese, German, Spanish,  and more will be needed throughout the event to assist ship liaisons and crew support around town and with written communications.

Volunteer Managers (June 1-12, 2012) Personnel management skills essential, must be available for entire event (June 1-12th).  Individuals will be the leader and representative of a group of 10-20 volunteers and work with the OpSail 2012 Virginia™ staff to manage the scheduling and function of your volunteer group.  This is a great leadership opportunity as well as a chance to be vital part of OpSail 2012 Virginia™.
