USACE ADAMS II is a hydrographic survey vessel operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.  The ADAMS II performs important surveys of the navigational channels of the Hampton Roads area, the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Ocean.

The R/V BAY EAGLE is operated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester, VA.  She outfitted with a wet lab containing a flow-through seawater system, and a dry lab housing the electronics. It has two boom winches and redundant hydraulic systems to accommodate a variety of scientific needs and data collections. The R/V Bay Eagle also utilizes interchangeable stern decks which increases its versatility when changing from trawling, to dredging, long lining or other applications.

The buyboat F.D. CROCKETT, built in 1924 by Alex Gaines and John Franklin Smith of Dare, Virginia, is one of only two large log deck boats built specifically for motor still in existence, and the only one with its original log bottom. It was built during the transition on the bay from sail powered vessels to the internal combustion engine and is an example of the Poquoson style log canoe.The nine log hull of the F. D. CROCKETT gave the boat the wide beam and low draft that made it ideal to haul freight and fish in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Donated to the Deltaville Maritime Museum in 2005, the vessel is being restored to its original working condition to bring her maritime heritage to ports throughout the bay.

The Elizabeth River Project’s LEARNING BARGE is the world’s first floating wetlands classroom.  It’s mission is to enhance awareness of the environmental issues affecting the Elizabeth River and to help train the next generation of stewards to protect the region’s natural resources.  The barge is a self contained unit, with composting toilets, solar panels and wind turbines.

R/V FAY SLOVER is Old Dominion University’s research vessel, which operates along the estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay.  She collects water and air quality samples, weather information, and  is a platform for numerous student projects in physics, geology, biology and chemistry.

The FERDINAND HASSLER is the newest vessel built for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  The ship is named after Ferdinand Hassler, a Swiss born immigrant and the first Superintendant of the Coast Survey, the precursor to today’s NOAA.  Sent to Europe to procure instruments for the Coast Survey, Hassler was detained in England throughout the War of 1812.   NOAA’s ship FERDINAND HASSLER will be commissioned during the OpSail 2012 Virginia events and NOAA’s Atlantic Operations Center off Brambleton Ave. will be the center of environmental programs throughout the weekend of June 8-11, 2012.

USCGC KENNEBEC is the third in a class of four inland construction tenders.  Her mission is to build or repair the aids to navigation used along the navigable channels of the Chesapeake Bay.  The cutter was built in Baltimore, MD and  commissioned in 1976.  She is named after a river in Maine.

R/V MAURY, formerly U.S. Navy PCF- 2 (Patrol Craft Fast) is the research vessel for Tidewater Community College.  The boat was originally built in the early 1960’s as a riverine warfare vessel for Vietnam.  In 1995, TCC acquired PCF -2 and converted her for use in the Chesapeake Bay as a research vessel.

 MURIEL EILEEN is an original vessel built in Bena, VA in 1926. Buy boats were motorized vessels that worked the Bay during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Buy boats would motor out to the oyster beds where the traditional dredgers - sailing craft like skipjacks and bugeyes - were hauling oysters. Purchasing the oysters from the dredgers, buy boats would carry the purchase to the market in towns along the Chesapeake Bay.

NORFOLK REBEL has been a mainstay at almost every maritime event in Norfolk since her christening in 1980.  She is the world’s only sail assisted tug boat, and an early harbinger to today’s “green” movement.  Her builder, Lane Briggs was instrumental in creating the first Norfolk Harborfest® events and the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

The OCEAN EXPLORER is a research vessel operated jointly by the Virginia Beach Aquarium and Virginia Wesleyan College. OCEAN EXPLORER is used by the Aquarium in its collection of specimens and its mammal and sea turtle research projects. Virginia Wesleyan uses the boat to support its growing marine biology and ornithology programs.

MSRC RELENTLESS is operated by the Marine Spill Response Corporation.  She is equipped with an articulating crane, oil booms and pumps for oil recovery as well as the latest navigational and communications systems.  MSRC RELENTLESS will be docking at NOAA's Atlantic Marine Operations Center for a portion of the opSail 2012 Virginia events.

USCGC SHEARWATER is a one of the USCG’s Marine Protector class coastal patrol vessels and is based in Portsmouth, VA.  This class of vessels is designed with a stern launching ramp for an inflatable boat.  USCGC SHEARWATER and her sister ships are used for migration and smuggling interdiction, search and rescue missions, and fisheries enforcement.

USCGC WILLIAM TATE is a KEEPER class buoy tender named after a North Carolina light house keeper that assisted the Wright Brothers in their early flights.  Z-drive propulsion, a bow thruster, and  modern navigation equipment allows the USCGC WILLIAM TATE and her sister ships to maintain a static position in various sea states while working on navigational aids.
