WEDNESDAY JUNE 6, 2012

Sea and Air Parade- The Sea and Air Parade of Sail is a new event for OpSail 2012 Virginia™. It will include the International fleet of naval vessels as well as waterborne and air assets from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers and other government and private organizations.  The Parade will highlight the importance of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and other Sea Services within our community while showcasing the Port of Virginia to our International guests.  Details for the event are still being finalized, but the route will include the Parade passing through the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at Cape Henry, through Thimble Shoals Channel via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, past Fort Monroe in Hampton, and into downtown Norfolk along the Elizabeth River.  The first ships will pass Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.  Viewing from Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth.  For more information, visit Parade of Sail Information.

FRIDAY JUNE 8, 2012

OpSail 2012 Virginia™  Parade of Sail- The International fleet of tall ships will begin arriving on Thursday, June 7, 2012.  They will anchor in Lynnhaven Roads, just north of the John A. Lesner Bridge on the Virginia Beach waterfront.  The Parade of Sail will begin at 7AM on the morning of Friday, June 8, 2012.  The fleet will parade from the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage through Thimble Shoals Channel, past the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (between Trestles A and B) and past Fort Monroe in Hampton.  From there, the ships will move through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk.  The first ships in the Parade will reach Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Friday, June 8, 2012.  Ships will then proceed to their docks in downtown Norfolk, or in other Affiliate Ports, before opening to the public for tours.  Viewing locations in Virginia Beach, Eastern Shore, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.  For general parade updates, visit Parade of Sail Information.

June 10, 8:30am-sunset)  The globe’s premier single-weekend sand soccer festival hosts 10,000 players at the Virginia Beach oceanfront and will feature an OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Division.  Colorful international teams parade to the sound on conga drums enroute to the incredible U.S. OPEN Pro/Am matches; hundreds of youth teams aged 9-19 battle on the beaches, men’s and women’s single gender squads, and college teams.

World Ocean’s Day Celebration (10am-4pm, 717 General Booth Boulevard Virginia Beach, VA 23451)  The Virginia Aquarium will make a splash as we celebrate World Ocean's Day 2012!  Story times and puppet shows will help Aquarium guests learn more about the marine environment.  A "fishy fun" scavenger hunt will lead guests on a tour through the Ocean Pavilion to find clues to unlock a treasure chest filled with prizes. Guests can meet divers in the Chesapeake Bay Aquarium and find out what it's like to be underwater with the fishes. Kids and adults can make their own "ocean in a bottle”, play "reef rumble" and participate in other fun activities throughout the day.  Since Dr. Seuss will be featured again as the theme character in World Ocean Day, a Dr. Seuss Breakfast for non-members will be offered Sunday, June 10, from 9-10:30 a.m. Dr. Seuss characters will be joining the breakfast and entertaining guests. SPRING 2012-SUMMER 2012

The Revenue Cutter Service & The War of 1812 (The Old Coast Guard Station, 24th Street & Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach. (757) 422-1587.  Wed. June 5 – Sun. August 5. Mon-Sat. 10am-5pm, Sun. noon-5pm)  In celebration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, this exhibit explores the participation of the Revenue Cutter Service, a predecessor of the United States Coast Guard, during the conflict with Great Britain. Many of the current core missions of the Coast Guard were first implemented during this conflict 200 years ago. Exhibit included with museum admission- Adult $4, Senior/Military $3, Child $2

MOCA PRESENTS “ANDY WARHOL: PORTRAITS” (2200 Parks Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 from May 26-August 19, 2012) The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is unveiling a pop art blockbuster this Spring—“Andy Warhol: Portraits,” featuring original works from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.   “Andy Warhol: Portraits” includes more than 140 portraits produced by Warhol from the 1940s to the 1980s. This exhibition contains portraits of Warhol in his youth, a reproduction of Warhol's first celebrity autograph (from Shirley Temple in 1941), early portrait drawings from the 1940s, samples of Warhol's  commercial work from the 1950s, movie star portraits from the 1960s, and more than 100 portrait paintings from the 1970s and 1980s. The most comprehensive exhibition of portraiture by Warhol, this show debuted at the Warhol Museum in Spring 2010 and is exhibiting at MOCA for the first time in the US since then.  Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for students/seniors/military. Children under 4 and MOCA members are free.  In order to make the exhibition more accessible, we’ll be open seven days a week with extended hours: M-F 10am-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4pm.  For more information, visit www.virginiamoca.org.
