The Downtown Norfolk Waterfront transforms once again into an exciting playground for people of all ages. The historic waterfront festival offers a weekend packed with exciting activities on land and sea! 

Special to this year; Norfolk Harborfest® will host OpSail 2012 Virginia from June 6-12, 2012 as part of the national commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner.  Under the Norfolk Harborfest®/ OpSail 2012 Virginia umbrella activities will include not one... not two... BUT THREE Parade of Sails, tall ships and military vessels from all around the world, the largest fireworks show on the East Coast, local, regional and national entertainment, family activities, unique and unusual performances, water activities and much more. All these scheduled events will be happening throughout the entire downtown Norfolk Waterfront spanning 3 miles from Harbor Park to the MHI Docks located in West Ghent.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 6, 2012

Sea and Air Parade- The Sea and Air Parade of Sail is a new event for OpSail 2012 Virginia™. It will include the International fleet of naval vessels as well as waterborne and air assets from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers and other government and private organizations.  The Parade will highlight the importance of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and other Sea Services within our community while showcasing the Port of Virginia to our International guests.  Details for the event are still being finalized, but the route will include the Parade passing through the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at Cape Henry, through Thimble Shoals Channel via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, past Fort Monroe in Hampton, and into downtown Norfolk along the Elizabeth River.  The first ships will pass Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.  Viewing from Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth.  For more information, visit Parade of Sail Information.

OpSail 2012 Virginia™  Parade of Sail
- The International fleet of tall ships will begin arriving on Thursday, June 7, 2012.  They will anchor in Lynnhaven Roads, just north of the John A. Lesner Bridge on the Virginia Beach waterfront.  The Parade of Sail will begin at 7AM on the morning of Friday, June 8, 2012.  The fleet will parade from the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage through Thimble Shoals Channel, past the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (between Trestles A and B) and past Fort Monroe in Hampton.  From there, the ships will move through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk.  The first ships in the Parade will reach Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Friday, June 8, 2012.  Ships will then proceed to their docks in downtown Norfolk, or in other Affiliate Ports, before opening to the public for tours.  Viewing locations in Virginia Beach, Eastern Shore, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.  For general parade updates, visit Parade of Sail Information.

Military Heritage Encampment (Front Street Park at Fort Norfolk.  Fri. June 8- Mon. June 11, noon-sunset) A timeline event commemorating the history of our nation’s military services, OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Military Heritage Encampment will include more than 200 participants in 20 units demonstrating the life of the average Soldier, Sailor, and Marine from colonial days to today’s active duty military.  Come out and see the tools, weapons, tactics and camp life from different time periods and watch exciting demonstration on the tactical demonstration field.  Walk through history, try on uniforms, learn to march in formation, and watch a Civil War cannon fired!   

Norfolk Freemason Historic District (Historic Freemason, Norfolk VA, noon-8pm) As visitors turn the corner onto Brooke Avenue up through the Pagoda and Oriental Garden, up to College Place and over to Botetourt Street and Freemason Street, time will roll back to a warm summer day in June 1812. Porches and street corners will be draped with patriotic flags to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner.  The streets will flood with familiar faces including President Thomas Jefferson, President James Madison, President James Monroe and Dolley Madison.  For more information, visit 1812ShipLifeLandingPages/Freemason.html.

1812 Ship Life (Towne Bank Fountain Park, Norfolk VA, noon-8pm) Just steps away from the docks, images of the Borough of Norfolk recreated by local artists and scenic designers Mike and Janet Bell brought to life. Suspended in time, visitors will pass by townsmen and women attending daily chores, see young children playing in The Yard, smell the aromas of ribs and stews wafting from the Towne Tavern, wander the rustic stalls and workshops of master craftsmen, and explore the Old Ironsides to discover what life was like aboard an 1812 Tall Ship.  For more information, visit 1812ShipLifeLandingPages/ShipLife.html.

Tidewater Community College's "A Dig in Time" Family Activity (Norfolk)  From 10am-2pm in the Reading Garden at TCC (300 Granby Street, Norfolk VA 23510) a mock dig where children will unearth a “prize archaeological find” and learn about archaeology.  Archaeology is the discovery of historical artifacts and this family activity will teach children about the importance of artifacts in understanding history.

Norfolk Harborfest® 36th ANNUAL FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA (Waterfront Norfolk and Portsmouth. 9:30pm)  Presented by WAVY TV 10.  The biggest and best fireworks show on the East Coast!  Be prepared for the unexpected as the sky is filled with an explosive display of light synchronized to a booming musical score. The show is scheduled for Saturday night at 9:30pm and fired from barges on the Elizabeth River.

Opening Ceremony for Historic Fort Norfolk (801 Front Street, Norfolk VA 23510; 3-3:30pm) Come celebrate the re-opening of historic Fort Norfolk, the last remaining of the 19 harbor-front forts authorized by President George Washington in 1794 and active fort during the War of 1812.  Participating in the ceremony will be the Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk Historical Society, Stihl Inc., and Rocky Hill Contracting.  The ceremony will also include the Garrison of 1812 re-enactors who will be doing historical demonstrations throughout the weekend. For more information on Fort Norfolk go to: www.norfolkhistorical.org/fort/tour.html.

Volksmarsch with Peninsula Pathfinders of Virginia (Norfolk)  A Volksmarch is a non-competitive 3.1 mile (5 km) or 6.2 mile (10 km) walk. Fleet Chef Challenge- Final Competition (Town Point Park, Norfolk.1:30pm)  A culinary competition of epic proportions!  Chefs from the visiting fleet of international tall ships and naval vessels will each partner with a Virginia chef to create a menu and prepare a three course meal from locally grown Virginia’s Finest products, influenced by cuisine from the ship’s home country.   Four finalists meals will then be judged in the final competition with scores based on taste, presentation and use of the Virginia’s Finest products provided.

Blessing of the Fleet (Mercury Landing in Town Point Park, Norfolk at 6am)

Parade of Sail Up the Chesapeake- A new event for OpSail 2012 Virginia™ !  As the fleet of tall ships depart, they will proceed in formation out of the Elizabeth River, past Fort Monroe in Hampton and turn northward in the Chesapeake Bay towards their next port of call in Baltimore, MD.  The fleet will maintain a speed of six knots, passing Smith Point at the mouth of the Potomac River around sunset (about 9PM) on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.  Recreational boaters, yacht clubs and charter vessels are encouraged to participate in the Parade by sailing alongside the fleet as they make their way northward.  This will offer a unique opportunity to see the tall ships in their natural environment - at sea.  Boaters are encouraged to check this website regularly to learn more about the Parade and look for informational brochures on small boat safety and navigational restrictions specific to OpSail 2012 Virginia™ .  Viewing locations in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck, Eastern Shore.  For more information, visit Parade of Sail Information.

SPRING 2012-SUMMER 2012

Voyage of Discovery Exhibit at Norfolk Botanical Garden (6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, VA 23518.  Sat. June 16-Mon. Sept. 3, 9am-7pm)  Norfolk Botanical Garden will celebrate OpSail 2012 Virginia™ with an exciting summer exhibit, Voyage of Discovery.  Enter a life-size section of the ship USS Constitution.  Cross the make-believe ocean to Treasure Island where you will explore a gigantic island of sand through use of a platform, slide, rope, games, activities and tunnels.  Set sail and steer your own remote control boat (fee), go on a treasure hunt, solve word puzzles with nautical flags and much more! Included with regular Garden admission- Adult $9, Seniors & Military $8, Children & Youth (3-18) $7, Toddler (2 & under) free
