Navy-ships.jpgSea and Air Parade- The Sea and Air Parade of Sail is a new event for OpSail 2012 Virginia™. It will include the International fleet of naval vessels as well as waterborne and air assets from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers and other government and private organizations.  The Parade will highlight the importance of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and other Sea Services within our community while showcasing the Port of Virginia to our International guests.  Details for the event are still being finalized, but the route will include the Parade passing through the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at Cape Henry, through Thimble Shoals Channel via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, past Fort Monroe in Hampton, and into downtown Norfolk along the Elizabeth River.  The first ships will pass Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.  Viewing from Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth.  For more information, visit Parade of Sail Information.

USS CHESAPEAKE: The Troubled History of a Troubled Ship (7:00 pm at Tidewater Community College, Chesapeake Campus- 1428 Cedar Road, Chesapeake VA 23322, Room 2057 in the Marian P. Whitehurst Building)  The USS CHESAPEAKE (the image of which figures prominently on the City of Chesapeake seal) played a role in both the coming of the War of 1812 and in the War itself.  Besides highlighting this naval history, the presentation will also cover other topics such as ship construction and the shipboard routines to give the audience a sense of life under sail.  Free & Open to the public.

OpSail 2012 Virginia™  Parade of Sail- The International fleet of tall ships will begin arriving on Thursday, June 7, 2012.  They will anchor in Lynnhaven Roads, just north of the John A. Lesner Bridge on the Virginia Beach waterfront.  The Parade of Sail will begin at 7AM on the morning of Friday, June 8, 2012.  The fleet will parade from the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage through Thimble Shoals Channel, past the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (between Trestles A and B) and past Fort Monroe in Hampton.  From there, the ships will move through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk.  The first ships in the Parade will reach Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk at noon on Friday, June 8, 2012.  Ships will then proceed to their docks in downtown Norfolk, or in other Affiliate Ports, before opening to the public for tours.  Viewing locations in Virginia Beach, Eastern Shore, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.  For general parade updates, visit Parade of Sail Information.

June 11, 10am-8pm) THREE Parade of Sails, tall ships and military vessels from all around the world, the largest fireworks show on the East Coast, local, regional and national entertainment, family activities, unique and unusual performances, water activities and much more. Military Heritage Encampment (Front Street Park at Fort Norfolk.  Fri. June 8- Mon. June 11, noon-sunset) A timeline event commemorating the history of our nation’s military services, OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Military Heritage Encampment will include more than 200 participants in 20 units demonstrating the life of the average Soldier, Sailor, and Marine from colonial days to today’s active duty military.  Come out and see the tools, weapons, tactics and camp life from different time periods and watch exciting demonstration on the tactical demonstration field.  Walk through history, try on uniforms, learn to march in formation, and watch a Civil War cannon fired!   

MONT.jpgNorfolk Freemason Historic District (Historic Freemason, Norfolk VA, noon-8pm) As visitors turn the corner onto Brooke Avenue up through the Pagoda and Oriental Garden, up to College Place and over to Botetourt Street and Freemason Street, time will roll back to a warm summer day in June 1812. Porches and street corners will be draped with patriotic flags to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner.  The streets will flood with familiar faces including President Thomas Jefferson, President James Madison, President James Monroe and Dolley Madison.  For more information, visit 1812ShipLifeLandingPages/Freemason.html.

1812 Ship Life (Towne Bank Fountain Park, Norfolk VA, noon-8pm) Just steps away from the docks, images of the Borough of Norfolk recreated by local artists and scenic designers Mike and Janet Bell brought to life. Tidewater Community College's "A Dig in Time" Family Activity (Reading Garden at TCC, 300 Granby Street, Norfolk VA 23510. Fri. June 8-Sun. June 10, 10am-2pm)  This family activity features a mock dig where children unearth a “prize archaeological find” and learn about archaeology.  Archaeology is the discovery of historical artifacts and this family activity will teach children about the importance of artifacts in understanding history.

Tall ships at Cape Charles (Cape Charles Town Harbor. Hours: Fri. June 8 & Mon. June 11, 9am-5pm; Sun. June 10, 9am-6pm; Sat. Fleet Chef Final Competition (Town Point Park, Norfolk. 1:30pm)  A culinary competition of epic proportions!  Chefs from the visiting fleet of international tall ships and naval vessels will each partner with a Virginia chef to create a menu and prepare a three course meal from locally grown Virginia’s Finest products, influenced by cuisine from the ship’s home country.   Four finalists meals will then be judged in the final competition with scores based on taste, presentation and use of the Virginia’s Finest products provided.

Parade of Sail Up the Chesapeake- A new event for OpSail 2012 Virginia™ !  As the fleet of tall ships depart, they will proceed in formation out of the Elizabeth River, past Fort Monroe in Hampton and turn northward in the Chesapeake Bay towards their next port of call in Baltimore, MD.  The fleet will maintain a speed of six knots, passing Smith Point at the mouth of the Potomac River around sunset (about 9PM) on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.  Recreational boaters, yacht clubs and charter vessels are encouraged to participate in the Parade by sailing alongside the fleet as they make their way northward.  This will offer a unique opportunity to see the tall ships in their natural environment - at sea.  Boaters are encouraged to check this website regularly to learn more about the Parade and look for informational brochures on small boat safety and navigational restrictions specific to OpSail 2012 Virginia™ .  Viewing locations in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck, Eastern Shore.  For more information, visit Parade of Sail Information.

Sept. 3, 9am-7pm)  Norfolk Botanical Garden will celebrate OpSail 2012 Virginia™ with an exciting summer exhibit, Voyage of Discovery.  Enter a life-size section of the ship USS Constitution.  Cross the make-believe ocean to Treasure Island where you will explore a gigantic island of sand through use of a platform, slide, rope, games, activities and tunnels.  Set sail and steer your own remote control boat (fee), go on a treasure hunt, solve word puzzles with nautical flags and much more! Included with regular Garden admission.  Adult $9, Seniors & Military $8, Children & Youth (3-18) $7, Toddler (2 & under) free.
