Education

OpSail 2012 Virginia will capture the imagination of Virginia's youth with the exciting world of tall ships and sailing. When President Kennedy enacted Operation Sail in 1961, one of his key goals was to see the organization used as an educational tool for the young people of the United States of America. In this tradition, OpSail 2012 Virginia has developed education programs and resources with the goal of engaging students of every age throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the world.
This website features information about the War of 1812, influential leaders, types of ships, and more. We have also featured links to sites in our 1812 Bicentennial Resource Collection which describe important battles, everyday life of the period, and original documents of the era. We welcome you to explore the information and learn more about this often forgotten period of our nation's history.
If you are an educator and interested in getting your school involved, please click the tab on the left labeled "Message to Virginia Educators" to see what ways your school can be part of OpSail 2012 Virginia! "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
