We are pleased to announce that we have filled all Adopt A Ship positions!  Over fifty schools and organizations across Virginia are now learning about and preparing to welcome ships from around the world.  We would like to thank those who facilitated this process and look forward to working with our Adopt a Ship partners for a successful and educational event.

Adopt-A-Ship is an unparalleled opportunity for schools, organizations, and communities.  Each adopting group will have the chance to adopt a ship from the OpSail 2012 Virginia fleet and act as “ambassador” for the arriving crew from August 2011 to June 2012.  Adopt-A-Ship is one of our hallmark programs and was developed to build long lasting friendships, extend the warmest hospitality, and further the education of the young people of Virginia.  This is the occasion to involve the community in hosting one of these magnificent ships and to be an integral part of this world-class event. In the months preceding OpSail 2012 Virginia events, adopting groups will communicate with the ship’s crew and are encouraged to learn about the culture, traditions, and history of the ship and crew.

Adopt-a-Ship can augment a school’s curriculum throughout the year by integrating history, language studies, geography, art, and more in a creative and exciting way.  For schools, adopting a ship would culminate in the June 2012 event where selected students will have the opportunity to participate in OpSail 2012 Virginia festivities.  Transportation grants will be available to participating schools to help offset costs.  Grant applications will be given as funds permitting.

Organizations adopting a ship can host the ship’s crew for receptions, athletic outings, and other formal and informal hospitality events.  Members of the adopting group can also volunteer during the OpSail event as translators, event assistants, and more.  Adopt-a-Ship participants will play a large and important role in welcoming the fleet and introducing the ship and crew to our state.

Thank you for your interest in welcoming the OpSail 2012 Virginia fleet!
