Spencer C. Tucker has written or edited forty books on military and naval history. His biography of Captain Stephen Decatur, Jr. won the Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt Prize for best book in naval history. He will discuss the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair, the encounter between a British 4th rate and an American frigate off the Virginia Capes that almost brought war in 1807.
David Healey is the author of 1812: Rediscovering Chesapeake Bay’s Forgotten War and scores of magazine articles. On January 19, his lecture will take a look at those who played a role- for better or worse- in the outcome of the war on the Chesapeake Bay, including several larger-than-life personalities such as Admiral Cockburn, Joshua Barney, and flagmaker Mary Pickersgill.

Brian Lavery is one of the world’s leading authorities on the sailing fighting ship and is the author of a series of critically acclaimed works. Mr. Lavery was also the historical consultant for the construction of Jamestown Settlement’s Susan Constant as well as the film Master and Commander. His lecture will discuss the War of 1812 from the Royal Navy's perspective.

He has published numerous works on the subject of early American history, the war of 1812, and early American military history. Recently featured in PBS's film, "The War of 1812", Professor Hickey joins us to discuss the myths surrounding the people and battles of the the time period.

Catherine Allgor is a History Professor and University of California Presidential Chair who has written extensively on Dolley Madison. She was recently featured on PBS’s documentary series “American Experience” as an expert on Dolley Madison. Her lecture will explore how this vibrant, bold First Lady came to symbolize the strength of the new American nation and its diplomacy.
